Completing an Open Response Assessment

Completing an Open Response Assessment

The steps in an open response assessment are arranged in the required order of completion.
This section outlines how to complete a sample open response assessment, which may include the following steps: response, assessment training, peer assessment, self-assessment, and staff grading. However, your specific assignment may not include all of these steps. For a detailed explanation of possible steps, refer to The Steps in an Open Response Assessment.

How Grading Is Done In Open Response Assessments

  1. Submit Your Response
  2. Learn to Assess Responses
  3. Assess Peer Responses
  4. Assess Additional Peer Responses (optional)
  5. Assess Your Response
  6. Staff Grade

At any time during an assessment, you can see your progress at the bottom of the page under Your Grade. A message indicates the steps that must still be completed before you can receive your final grade for the assignment.

Submit Your Response

To submit your response for an open response assessment, follow these steps:

  1. Read the question carefully. Some course teams provide important details in the question, such as response length requirements or specific topics to cover.

Note: Your response cannot exceed 10,000 words (approximately 20 single-spaced pages on 8.5x11-inch paper).

  2. Enter your response. Type your answer in the field under Your Response.

Note: Some assignments allow you to submit images or other file types instead of or in addition to a written response. If file uploads are enabled, you will see Browse and Upload options below the response field.
For details on file uploads, see Submit a File with Your Response.

Note: If your assignment requires LaTeX formatting, use the Preview in LaTeX option to check your work before submission.

  3. Submit your response. Once you’ve completed all questions, select Submit your response to proceed to the next step.

    • If you need more time, select Save Your Progress
to save a draft and return later to submit your response.

Once you submit your response, the next step—typically assessment training or peer assessment—becomes available. However, you are not required to begin immediately. If you need to take a break, simply refresh or reopen your browser when you return.

Submit a File with Your Response

If your assignment allows or requires you to upload images or other files, you will see two buttons below the response field: Choose Files on one side and Upload Files on the other.

Important Notes:

  • The total size of uploaded files must be less than 10 MB.
  • Accepted image formats include .jpg, .gif, and .png.

Steps to Upload a File:

  1. Below the response field, select Choose Files.
  2. In the dialog box that opens, select the file you want to upload, then click Open.
    • A preview of each file appears.
  3. Enter a written description for each image. This ensures accessibility for learners who cannot view the image.
  4. Select Upload Files (across from the Choose Files button).

You can replace uploaded files before submission by repeating steps 1–3.

View Your Submitted Response

You can review your submission at any time.

  • Click the Your Response heading in the assignment to expand the section.
  • Your response will appear along with its status and any remaining steps before grading.

Learn to Assess Responses

Some assignments include a training step to help you assess peer responses effectively.

How It Works:

  1. Read each sample response and the rubric carefully.
  2. For each criterion, select the rating that best reflects the response.
  3. Click Compare Your Selections with the Instructor’s Selections.
    • If your selections match the instructor’s, the next response appears automatically.
    • If there’s a mismatch, you will see a message highlighting the differences.
  4. Review the response and adjust your assessment until it aligns with the instructor’s.

Once you successfully assess all sample responses, the next step in the assignment becomes available.

Assess Peer Responses

In this step, you evaluate responses submitted by other learners using the rubric. The course team determines the required number of assessments per learner.

Process:

  • At the top of the Peer Assessment step, you’ll see a counter (e.g., 1 of 3).

  • For each peer response, you will:

    1. Review the question and the response.
    2. Use the rubric to select ratings.
    3. Provide comments in the available fields.

Note: Some assessments require comments for each criterion before submission (up to 300 characters per comment).

  • Click Submit Your Assessment to proceed to the next response.

  • The system updates the assessment count after each submission.

Once you complete the required number of peer assessments, the next step becomes available.

Note:
If no responses are available for grading, a status message will prompt you to check back later.

Assess Additional Peer Responses (Optional)

After meeting the peer assessment requirement, this step collapses. If you wish to continue assessing, expand the Assess Peers section and click Continue Assessing Peers.

Assess Your Own Response

After completing peer assessments, the Self-Assessment step becomes available.

  • Review your response using the same rubric.
  • Select ratings and submit your assessment.

Once completed, the next step becomes available. If no further steps remain and you’ve received enough peer assessments, you can view your final score.

Staff Grade

Some assignments include a Staff Assessment step, where a course team member evaluates your response.

  • You do not need to take any action for this step.
  • The status updates to Complete once grading is finished.

Additional Notes:

  • Even if a Staff Grade step is not listed, course staff can still grade your assignment (e.g., if peer assessments are inappropriate or inaccurate).
  • If a staff member has graded your response, a Staff Grade
section will appear in your grading details.
