How Peer Assessment Scores Are Calculated
How Peer Assessment Scores Are Calculated
Staff Grade vs. Peer Assessment
- If a staff grade is assigned—either because a staff assessment step was included or because a course team member overrode inappropriate peer assessments—then peer assessments do not affect the final grade.
- A staff grade is always the final grade, regardless of any peer assessments received.
How Peer Assessment Scores Are Determined
- Peer assessments are scored by criterion, and each criterion’s score is determined by the median (not the average) of the scores given by different peer assessors.
- Example: If the Ideas criterion receives scores of 10, 9, and 5, the median score is 9, not the average (8).
Your final peer assessment score is the sum of the median scores across all individual criteria.

Final Score Calculation:
- Ideas: Median 8 (out of 10)
- Content: Median 8 (out of 10)
- Grammar: Median 4 (out of 5)
- Final Score: 8 + 8 + 4 = 20 (out of 25)
🔹 Important: Your final score is not the median of overall peer scores. Instead, it is the sum of the median scores for each criterion.
