Timed Exam Overview

Timed exams consist of a series of questions that must be completed within a set time limit. The score you earn will be recorded as part of your course progress.

On the Course page, timed exams are marked with a clock icon and labeled as "Timed Exam."
Once you begin the exam, a timer will appear on the course page, showing the remaining time to finish. Timed exams cannot be paused or reset. When time runs out, the exam will be automatically submitted.
The time limit applies to all pages within the exam section. If the exam is spread across multiple pages, you must finish each page before the timer expires or before submitting the exam.

Taking a Timed Exam

You may request additional time to complete a timed exam. Course teams can grant extra time for individual learners if needed. However, this request must be made before starting the exam. For more details, see Requesting Additional Time.

How to Take a Timed Exam

To take a timed exam, follow these steps:

  1. Open the timed exam page in the course.

  2. Check the time limit listed on the exam page to ensure you have enough time to complete the exam.

Note: Once you begin, the exam cannot be paused or restarted.

  3. If needed, course teams can offer extra time for individual learners. See Requesting Additional Time for more details.

  4. Click I am ready to start this timed exam to begin.

  5. Complete the problems on each page of the exam. Click Submit to score your answers on that page. If you don’t click Submit, your responses won’t be scored.

  6. Keep an eye on the time remaining, shown in the time display at the top of the course page.

When 20% of the time remains, the time display bar will darken to alert you. When only 5% of the time remains, the text on the bar will become bold.

Note: You can hide the remaining time by clicking the icon next to the timer. To show the time again, click the icon once more.

  7. Once you've finished and reviewed all pages, click End My Exam at the top of the course page. If you run out of time, the exam will automatically end.

    Note: You must click Submit
to score the problems on each exam page. If you skip this step, the page will not be scored, and your exam results will not reflect the problems from that page.

Hiding the Exam Timer

By default, the remaining time in the exam is visible. You have the option to hide or show the timer.

To hide the remaining time, click the "eye" icon next to the timer.

To display the remaining time again, simply click the "eye" icon once more.

Requesting Additional Time

You can request extra time to complete a timed exam. Course teams and instructors can extend the time for individual learners based on specific needs.

Note: Requests for additional time must be made before starting the exam. Once the exam has started, the course team cannot grant more time for that attempt.

Course teams will determine whether additional time is granted, based on their criteria. For more information about requesting extra time, contact your course team.
