Watching Videos on the SkillsMax Video Player

Watching Videos on the SkillsMax Video Player

All SkillsMax courses include videos, and the platform has its own custom video player. If you've watched online videos before, most of the controls will be familiar to you, but there are some additional features unique to the SkillsMax video player.

The following image illustrates the video player during playback, with explanations for each control or option available.

Note: The example below shows a video player with all possible features enabled. When you use the video player in a course, only the controls relevant to that specific video will be available.

Video Player Controls

  • Play/Pause: Click this button to play the video. Click it again to pause.

  • Time: The first number shows how much time the video has played, while the second number indicates the total video length.

  • Playback Bar: Drag this bar to move to a specific point in the video, or use the left and right arrow keys.

  • Speed: Adjust the playback speed by selecting different speed options.

  • Volume: Use this control to adjust the video’s volume.

  • HD: If available, you can play the video in high-definition resolution. This works best with a fast internet connection. Select it again to return to standard resolution.

  • Full Screen: Expand the video to fill your browser window by clicking this control. To exit full-screen mode, press ESC on your keyboard or click the button again.

  • Show/Hide Closed Captioning: Enable or disable captions for the video. If captions are displayed, you can move them around the screen by dragging them. Click the control again to hide them.

Note: Sometimes, you may see two sets of captions if YouTube is hosting the video and your YouTube account settings are set to always display captions. To fix this, either click CC again or adjust your YouTube account settings.

  • Show Transcript: Click this control to display a full, scrolling transcript of the video's audio on the right side. Many courses set transcripts to appear by default when the video starts. Click the control again to hide the transcript.

  • Language Menu: If translations are available, you can select a different language for captions and the transcript with this control.

  • Download Video: If available, this option allows you to download the video to watch later.

  • Download Transcript: You can download the transcript of the video as a SubRip (.srt) file or a text (.txt) file, both of which can be opened in a text editor like Notepad.

  • Handouts: Download any handouts associated with the video by the course team.

  • License or Copyright: If the video is subject to specific rights or a Creative Commons license, that information will be displayed below the video player. Clicking the license will take you to a webpage with more details on your rights.

For more information on licenses, see Understanding How Courses and Videos Are Licensed.

  • Transcript Navigation: You can scroll through the transcript and click any line to jump to that part of the video.
